I tried Mosquito Bits but wasn’t having any luck. People on YouTube were saying that it would take 3-4 waterings, but after 2, I didn’t see any reduction. I’m sure it does work for a lot of people. Also tried the neem oil thing, but it only seemed temporary (a few hours). The gnat infestation had already been going on for over a month, and I wasn’t comfortable handling the bits.
The sand worked almost instantly. I poured a layer in the pot about an inch thick. Didn’t even wait for the soil to dry, just put it right in. First night the yellow sticky mats had an 80% reduction in gnats. By day 2 there was maybe a handful of additional gnats. They’re not flying around anymore or showing up in random places. Day 3 - 99% reduction. I expect they’ll be 100% gone soon, as the ones flying around now are stragglers that already left the soil days ago before the sand was applied.
If I had to do it all over again, I’d just get this and the yellow sticky paper and forget any of the other stuff. Plus it looks cool in the pot and gives it a nice finished look.
PROBLEM SOLVED
I live in FL and outside in the ground, where the Air Conditioning condensation line drain drips into, was getting to become a big puddle. It was attracting all kinds of bugs. I realized mulch and dirt weren't the solution, because they just can't absorb all that water, especially when the sun isn't out and the ground stays wet. Don't expect the HOA to solve this problem, they just go for the cheap mulch, which is how the problem got worse.
So, I decided to go with nature, and buy this Mosser Lee Sand. I had to buy many bags of this, but it has been great ! It blends well with the ground's dirt, and it absorbs the water fine. I may see a tiny puddle from time to time, and have to rearrange the sand, but it's no big puddle like it was before. It really makes the outside look more normal and natural.

I have a lot of house plants and start veggies and flowers for my garden indoors. Naturally, with that much soil, fungus gnats are never too far behind regardless of what methods are used to avoid them. They will always pop up here and there.
Enter this sand. Initially, I used it on the top layer of potting mix for plants in my basement near grow lights. I would go down every day or 2, but didn’t notice anything out of place. I recently potted up a large Monstera Deliciosa that is located in my living room. A few weeks later, the gnats appeared. I used some of this sand to cover the top of it. Now that it’s in my vision, I see little larva appearing on top of the sand every couple of days. So far, 3. I don’t know what they are, but they aren’t on or around any of the plants without sand. So, it works for keeping gnats at bay, but you may be introducing something else you were unprepared for.
